Application

Character Name: Nia / Sparkles McGee
Canon: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
AU/OC/Previous Game: Previous Game (Sabra La Tau)
Age: 21
Appearance: Like a Disney princess put through anime colour schemes. Nia has long fluffy hair, down to her feet, that is a whorly pale yellow/light blue. Her eyes are blue with pink flower-shaped pupils. She is slender and of average height; she also has his tattoo on her left upper arm in bright cyan: http://www.cumuluscentral.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/sketch10.jpg
Cause of Death: Nia was a virtual lifeform, created by another race. When that race was defeated, her existence could no longer be sustained. She held on to life for a short while afterwards, but eventually disintegrated and died.
Impact of Death: Nia knew she would die, and went into death with a while on her face. While she is, naturally, not happy that she is dead, she knows that her loved ones will continue on and she did what she had to do to save her world. It’s likely she’ll be more bewildered at having turned up somewhere ELSE than saddened by her own death.

Character Info: Nia was born a princess in the beastmen’s capital Teppelin, the daughter of the Spiral King Lordgenome. Leading a privileged life, Nia never went outside the walls of the city, and grew into a polite, well-mannered and hard-hitting young lady (because sports are important to princesses, you know). One day, though, Nia made a mistake: she asked her father why she was born. Infuriated by her self-awareness, Lordgenome locked Nia in a box and ordered her thrown out of the city. That would have been the end of it, if it weren’t for a human boy, Simon, who found her box at the bottom of a ravine. Not yet understanding what had happened to her, Nia was delighted to be outside and see rain, and to meet Simon, though she had no idea what a human was. After joining with Simon’s group, Team Gurren, Nia soon learns harsh truths: that her father abandoned her to death, that he was responsible for killing humans and forcing them to live underground, and that Team Gurren was aiming to defeat him. Nia, incensed by these injustices, stood up to one of her father’s generals, Adiane, and loudly told her how wrong it all was. Luckily she was saved from death by Team Gurren, and travelled with them from that point onwards. Nia grew closer to Simon, and continued to believe in him when no one else would. Together with the rest of Team Gurren, they eventually reached the capital, where Simon and Nia met Lordgenome head on in battle. They finally defeated him, after he left a cryptic message about doom falling when the millionth human was born. Nia was saddened by his supposed death, but decided to keep moving forward. Shortly after this, Nia spent a brief but tumultuous time in Sabra La Tau (more info on this in the Old Game section below).

Over the next seven years, a new city was built where Teppelin fell, and humanity thrived and advanced. Now both twenty-one, Simon proposed to Nia and, after a brief period where she rejected him because of Cloud Cuckoolander logic (not believing that two people can actually be one - Nia always does take things too literally), agreed to marry him. But then Lordgenome’s warning came to pass: the millionth human was born, and the Anti-Spiral Annihilation System was activated... in Nia. A hidden code in her DNA transformed her into the Anti-Spiral Messenger, a cold-hearted program that merely wished complete despair on humanity. She appears before Simon again and again, apparently immune to his pleas to return to normal. But during a confrontation at the moon, he points out that if she really wasn’t the same, why would she still be wearing her engagement ring? Nia had been trying to reach out to Simon all along, and was able to return to her normal personality before the Anti-Spirals, the race behind humanity’s intended destruction, took her back to their home world. They started to probe her for information, but Nia remained defiant, saying they would never understand humanity’s strength, and stayed firm in the belief that Simon and Team Gurren would succeed.

After some space, battle and dimensional shenanigans, Simon does indeed show up to rescue Nia and fight the Anti-Spirals for the right to survive. In the middle of this, he realises that Nia is going to disappear once the Anti-Spirals are defeated, being a program of their making. However, she tells him to keep fighting, and ultimately they defeat the Anti-Spirals and return home. Nia lasts a few more days, until her wedding, where she tells Simon that she loves him and finally disappears, content in the knowledge that this is what they fought for.

Nia led an infinitely sheltered life before meeting Simon, and as a result she is very naïve about most things, including what a human is. While she may not know a lot about the world, as a person she is compassionate and unfailingly sweet. She treats everyone she meets with kindness and a polite attitude, even if they’re interrogating her as an enemy. Nia is always curious about things she doesn’t understand, and asks a lot of questions of those around her, occasionally ones that may be painful but ultimately are necessary. This doesn’t mean that Nia never gets angry, however; if she finds something unacceptable to her, she is quite okay with lecturing someone, even if she is currently caught in the claws of their gigantic mecha and they’re about to kill her. If she thinks you’re doing something wrong, you are damn well going to hear about it. Nia has some sadness and regret about how her father treated her and the humans, but her strong desire to keep moving forward keeps her smiling. As an adult, she still retains the same bubbly personality she had in youth (and tendency to Just Not Get It at times), but is a little more mature, particularly after her experiences as an Anti-Spiral. One thing that stays constant is her utter faith in Simon, and her love for him and belief in humanity’s worth is what allows her to break free of the Anti-Spiral programming and stay strong under duress. She wants the best for everyone, even if it means her own end.

Old Game Info: After the fall of Teppelin, Nia was approached by one of the Judges of Sabra La Tau, offering her a wish in exchange for playing the games there and having her memories removed. Thinking she had a chance to bring peace to the world, Nia accepted and soon woke up a memory-less blank on Cetus, one of the 16 teams there. Named Sparkles McGee by her teammates, she quickly learned that Sabra was not a nice place, one where people were often forced to injure or kill each other in games, and that the Judges held all the power. Regardless, Sparkles kept a positive demeanor and tried to support her team as best she could, which she often did just by being cheerful and understanding. Though she was not often suited to helping in the downfall of the Judges, she believed strongly that being there for Cetus (and Orion) and believing in them was something that she could do, and she did this wholeheartedly. Things were not always good; Nia suffered a real blow when Tomoe Mami, on Orion, died permanently under terrible circumstances, and she could not be as positive after that. She also encountered situations where she tried her best to help but could not, such as in Elliot Nightray’s heartgame, where her dramatic jesusing speech to Humpty-Dumpty in his heart was cut off by an unfortunate case of dying.

But in the end, Nia held strong through the final days of Sabra, did her part in the final battle (the singing rock-off part of it, at least) and was able to make her wish at the end. Nia loves Cetus the same way she loves the Gurren Brigade, and is proud to have been a part of it. She continued to visit her friends from Cetus and Orion after Sabra ended, and her bonds with them were very strong. Out of everyone, Nia was closest to Extreme/Kurono Kei, who was the first teammate she met when she woke up, and she had a tendency to follow him around and look to him for advice first. Her relationship with Orion was a bit rocky (as was the case with anyone who dealt with Orion), but she managed to maintain a friendship with Crown/Kurashiki Aoi, despite his caustic behaviour and insistence that her friendly attitude would get her hurt. She merely shot right back that her behaviour was her own decision.

Abilities (before Powercap): Nia’s abilities as an Anti-Spiral Messenger were teleportation, levitation, and the ability to summon Anti-Spiral ships from another dimension to attack on Earth. Her body was also comprised of a material that would explode on impact, which would have been quite devastating to anything in the area. Canon doesn’t show whether she retains these after she regains her own personality and mind from her programming.
Abilities (after Powercap): Since Nia returned to her former mentality, it’s unlikely she’d want to use her Anti-Spiral abilities even if she still has them. I would say that her body is still comprised of similar material to the Anti-Spiral Messenger, since she dissolves at canon’s end. So, even with the power cap, cutting or otherwise damaging her body will cause PROBLEMS, but she won’t explode. She may experience some disintegration that could be harmful to those around her. Similarly, she might retain some ability to teleport, but no further than a few dozen feet and not through walls. I am really up in the air about it though.
Items Brought In: her wedding ring

For context, Nia is 14 during this game, and she is being apped from 7 years later, at 21 years of age. However, her personality really... doesn’t change that much in the intervening time.

-Character survey
* Introduce yourself in a few sentences.
Well met, everyone. My name is Nia, and I am very pleased to meet you. I also have a second name, Sparkles McGee, but only a few people like to use it. Many people used to tell me that Nia is a better name, but the other name is one my team gave me, so it is still precious to me. I do not know why people find it so strange; I have told them it’s because I combined two names, ‘Sparkles’ and ‘Crazy Eyes McGee’, but they still think it is strange. But since I have two names, there is always one they will like.

* Describe yourself physically.
Physically? Oh! I have soft skin, and do not have fangs or claws or a tail. That is what a human looks like. But humans do not all look the same. What is different about me... I have very long hair, though it was cut short once. My eyes are different too, many people have told me that. I do not think most people have two colours in their eyes like I do.

* What was your childhood like?
I spent my childhood inside Teppelin, with my lord father. I liked it there, even though I never went outside. I was taught proper manners, and sports, and other things that princesses should know. Everyone there was a beastman. After I left... I knew that things were wrong. But I cannot say I had an unhappy time.

* Who is most important to you, and why?
Simon. He was the one who rescued me when my father threw me away, and he always comes for me, no matter how far away I am. I believe in him, because there is nothing he can’t do. He is the strongest person I know. If two people could be one person then I think we would be that. But we are married, which I think is close.

* What's your biggest pet peeve?
What is a ‘peeve’? I do not think I’ve ever had a peeve for a pet, or any other kind... oh! But Simon has Boota, and even though he is very small, he would be my biggest pet, if I can share with him.

* Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? Why?
I am an optimist. I will never give up, because I know there will always be other people fighting, so I should not stop either. Maybe I cannot do the same things that others do, but if there is anything I can help with, then I will do it. If I don’t believe in myself, then I will not get anywhere. We need to keep moving forward.

* Where, or how, did you learn your most important skills?
I learned many things while I was a princess, but I am very proud of my cooking, which I learned to do while I was with Team Gurren! There were not many jobs I could do on Dai-Gurren, except for cooking, and so I practiced at it every day. I still make Simon lunches now, and it makes us both happy.

* Do you think world peace is possible?
Yes. I do.

* Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?
I have argued with people, sometimes, when I did not understand or when I wanted them to know something. I think it is important to tell others what you think, even if they do not understand or agree. Because if we don’t talk, people can hurt each other, without knowing it, and I think that is worse.

* What turns you on the most?
Oh... nothing? I am not a machine, so I do not need to be turned on.

* Anything else you'd like to say?
Thank you very for talking with me. If you could tell me what a peeve is later, I would like that very much.
